The Aquila Atlantis Hotel travels you in time…
Get to know the most important museums and attractions of Heraklion!

South of Aquila Atlantis Hotel is located the Basilica of San Marco, built in 1239 and has been the Cathedral of the city. Today it houses the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion, where art and history offer a powerful experience.

Just a few meters from the Aquila Atlantis Hotel, stand the “Lions”, the ornate fountain, built during the early decades of the XVII century by Francesco Morosini, to decorate the square, but also to provide water in the great state.

Behind Aquila Atlantis Hotel is located the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, which is considered as one of the most important museums in Europe. In this museum have been gathered archaeological findings covering the history of the island for more than 5.500 years. A dominant position is given to the treasures of the Minoan civilization, which the visitor can admire throughout their historical continuity. The disc of Phaistos is the most important exhibit of the museum.

Close to Aquila Atlantis Hotel is located the Historical Museum of Crete. Among the outstanding artworks, paintings of the great painter EL GRECO are exhibited, who was born and studied painting in Heraklion, while there is a special place with memorabilia of the great author Nikos Kazantzakis.

The Venetian city of Heraklion is determined by its huge Venetian walls, which highlighted her for centuries as the most fortified state in the Mediterranean Sea. In the south wall rises the Martinengo bastion, where the great Cretan author Nikos Kazantzakis was buried.

The entire city of Heraklion is an unforgettable journey between successive eras of glamour and creativity. Experience this journey… throughout the year!
